چکیده

Small satellites are changing the space scene dramatically. By drastically reducing costs while still having impressive technological capabilities, their popularity among the space community is increasing at a very fast rate. Propulsion systems for these class of spacecraft are very limited. One promising technology is the ion Electrospray Propulsion System (iEPS) developed at the Space Propulsion Laboratory at MIT. Electrosprays accelerate ions present in the interface between an ionic liquid and vacuum using strong electric fields. Current thrust estimates for the iEPS modules land in the vicinity of tens of ptNewtons. Measuring the small thrust produced by the devices is challenging to say the least. This thesis presents the design and development of a Magnetically Levitated Thrust Balance (MLTB) for thrust estimation of the iEPS devices. The MLTB levitates an engineering model of a small satellite using magnetic fields inside a vacuum chamber. The zero friction environment is exploited to measure the minute thrust levels produced by the electrospray thrusters. Additional sensors and actuators that provide added functionality to the instrument are also explained. A fully stand-alone Power Processing Unit (PPU) capable of generating and delivering the high voltage signals needed to drive the thrusters is explained in detail. Test results of charging behavior and lifetime characterization of the emitted current are presented as a preliminary exploration of these processes. Thesis Supervisor: Paulo C. Lozano Title: Associate Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics

Experiments on a magnetically levitated planar actuator

Magnetically levitated planar actuators are developed as alternatives to xy-drives constructed of stacked linear motors. Although the translator of these ironless planar actuators can move over relatively large distances in the xy-plane only, it has to be controlled in six degrees-of-freedom (DOF) because of the active magnetic bearing. The advantage of magnetically levitated planar actuators i...

Modeling and Identification of a 3-DOF Planar Actuator with Manipulator

The goal of this paper is to describe the identification and modeling of a 3-degree-of-freedom (DOF) platform with a manipulator on top of it, which is magnetically levitated by 9 voice-coil actuators. This 3-DOF experimental setup is a pre-prototype of a 6-DOF magnetically levitated platform with manipulator in order to study combined control of both the platform and manipulator.

Pressure profiles of plasmas confined in the field of a magnetic dipole

Equilibrium pressure profiles of plasmas confined in the field of a dipole magnet are reconstructed using magnetic and x-ray measurements on the levitated dipole experiment (LDX). LDX operates in two distinct modes: with the dipole mechanically supported and with the dipole magnetically levitated. When the dipole is mechanically supported, thermal particles are lost along the field to the suppo...

Modeling and Vector Control of Planar Magnetic Levitator

We designed and implemented a magnetically levitated stage with large planar motion capability. This planar magnetic levitator employs four novel permanent-magnet linear motors. Each motor generates vertical force for suspension against gravity, as well as horizontal force for drive. These linear levitation motors can be used as building blocks in the general class of multi-degree-of-freedom mo...
